Norwood scale: what is it and how does it relate to baldness?

In the Norwood scale (also known as the Norwood-Hamilton scale), the extent and stages of male pattern baldness are classified. It is generally accepted by doctors to describe hair loss and to evaluate the severity of baldness in a patient. James Hamilton developed it in the 1950s, and O’Tar Norwood updated it in the 1970s.

The Norwood Hamilton hair loss scale is an extremely useful tool not only for assessing the degree of the hair loss, but for evaluating the possibilities a patient has when considering a hair transplant.

Stages on the Norwood scale

There are seven stages in total: from the first signs of hair loss in stage 1 to the most advanced form of baldness in stage 7. Here are some examples of Norwood scales.

Sometimes referred to as a juvenile hairline, in this stage there is a very minor or no recession at all of the hairline, and therefore no need for treatment. In fact, this is the stage where most boys’ hair will remain until their hairline matures (usually in the late teens and during the early 20s).

Unless you have a family history of baldness you should not worry; however, if there is a family history of male baldness, maybe you want to monitor the situation closely and decide when will be the appropriate time for a treatment.

At this stage triangular and typically symmetrical areas of recession at the front temporal area may be detected, but in general hair loss remains ahead of a line several centimeters in front of the ears. However, initial signs of baldness are becoming evident: hair falls and may become less dense in the central front part of the scalp.

This is a stage of the Norwood balding scale when men begin to alarm after noticing a slight recession in their hairline, but actually it doesn’t always means that hair loss is imminent.

The stage 3 addresses the most reduced degree of going bald considered adequate to be called pattern baldness, as indicated by Norwood. Most scalps at this stage have a profound balanced downturn appearing at the sanctuaries that are totally exposed or just scantily covered by hair.

In the stage 3 vertex, the crown is added and going bald is principally situated here, with restricted downturn of the front fleeting hairline. This is the mark of the Norwood balding scale where numerous men start to truly think about a treatment to forestall a further balding.

The contrast between stages 3 and 4 can be gentle, being the main that at stage 4 men will have more downturn at the sanctuaries, framing a more profound M-shape. There is additionally a definitive absence of hair on the crown, with a band of modestly thick hair stretching out across the top isolating the transient and the crown regions with going bald.

Now a little fix of hair might be – or not-still present at the front of the scalp; this isn’t the situation of V a, where the fix is totally gone and the downturn of the forefront is finished. At this stage the going bald in the vertex district is as yet isolated from the front fleeting locale, however the division is substantially less particular.

The band of hair reaching out across the crown is additionally substantially more restricted and slender. Going bald on the vertex and front transient areas is more obvious, as well. When seen from a higher place, stages 5 to 7 show the excess hair along the edges and back with a horseshoe shape.

Stage 6 is described by an extending of the misfortune at the hairline and vertex. The extension of somewhat thick hair that once crossed the crown isolating the vertex and the transient district currently has been lost with just scanty hair staying there, so the two areas are presently joined into one exceptional region. Additionally balding on the two sides of the head broadens further.

This is the most severe form of hair loss in the Norwood scale. The only hair that remains at this stage is a strip wrapping from one side to the other on the head in a horseshoe shape. This hair may be less dense than before; however, it can be used as a donor area in case of a hair transplant.
